Hostess Gift Ideas: The Basket I Bring When I'm the Guest

The basket I give my own guests, and bring as a thank-you when I'm the guest: a candle and room spray, homemade fig and thyme butter, sourdough, wine and a playlist card. A quiet retreat in a basket, plus hostess gift ideas at every budget.

When I host, my guests go home with a basket. When I'm the guest in someone else's home, I return the favor with the same thing: a candle and a room spray, a crock of homemade compound butter, a loaf of sourdough, a good bottle of wine, and a thank-you card with a QR code that opens a playlist.

It is a little thank-you, yes. But more than that, it is a gift the hostess can enjoy on her own, days after the last guest has gone. A quiet retreat in a basket. Here is exactly what goes in mine, how to put one together, and more hostess gift ideas at every budget.

The short answer: The best hostess gift ideas are things the host can enjoy later, on her own time, after the guests have gone: a luxury candle, a room spray, something homemade like compound butter, fresh bread, a bottle of wine, or a thoughtful note. Bring it ready to give, so the host never has to stop and find a vase or a platter.

What Goes in My Hostess Gift Basket

I keep it small. A basket the hostess can set on the counter and unpack once the house is quiet is a gift. A basket she has to deal with tonight is a chore.

1. A candle and a matching room spray

A Pivotal Moments candle and its room and linen spray are the heart of my basket. The candle is for the quiet evening after the party. The spray lets her refresh the guest room or the couch cushions the next time company comes.

How to choose the scent: match the season. Mystic Pumpkin Fall Candle or Smoken Vanilla Amber Candle for a fall or Thanksgiving dinner, Yuletide Balsam Whisper Christmas Candle or Berry & Bough Berry & Pine Candle for Christmas, and Luminosity Lemon Bergamot Candle for anything bright, like a spring brunch.

2. A crock of homemade compound butter

This is the homemade touch, and my favorite go-to is brown butter fig and thyme butter. After my fall dinner party, I packed the extra into small butter crocks, and that is exactly what went home in my guests' goodbye baskets. The recipe is in my letter, The Seventh Guest Had Teeth.

Compound butter is simply softened butter mixed with herbs, honey, spices or fruit, then packed into a small crock. It makes the host's next breakfast feel special. For more ideas, see The Butter Edit and my honey lavender butter.

3. A loaf of sourdough

Bread and butter belong together. Wrap the loaf in parchment or a linen towel and tie it with ribbon.

4. A good bottle of wine

Wine is the classic hostess gift for a reason. Let the host know it's for her to enjoy later, so she never feels she has to open it with dinner.

5. A thank-you card with a playlist QR code

This is the finishing touch. I tuck in a thank-you card with a QR code that opens a Spotify playlist. When she scans it, the music keeps the evening going after the last guest leaves.

How to Put Together a Hostess Gift Basket

  1. Pick a small basket or tray. Something the host can reuse is a gift in itself.
  2. Start with the candle. It's the centerpiece, so place it first, front and center.
  3. Add the spray and the butter crock beside it. Keep the butter cold until you leave the house.
  4. Tuck in the bread and wine. Lay the loaf along the back and stand the bottle at one end.
  5. Finish with the card. Tie it to the handle or tuck it in front so it's the first thing she sees.

Hostess Gift Ideas for Thanksgiving and Christmas

Thanksgiving hostess gift: a fall scent like Mystic Pumpkin or Smoken Vanilla, with a crock of fig and thyme butter for the leftover rolls. If you're hosting this year instead, here is how I set my Thanksgiving table.

Christmas hostess gift: a holiday scent like Yuletide Balsam Whisper or Berry & Bough. Not sure which to choose? Here are the Christmas candle scents I light every December.

Hostess Gift Etiquette Tips

  • Bring it ready to give. No flowers that need a vase, no dish that needs to be plated.
  • Make it for later. Say "this is for you, for after," so the host never feels she has to serve it.
  • Keep it personal. One homemade thing, like the butter, means more than another store-bought item.
  • Add a note. A few handwritten lines are what she'll remember.

Hostess Gift FAQs

What is a good hostess gift?

A good hostess gift is something the host can enjoy later, without any work during the party: a luxury candle, a room spray, a bottle of wine, fresh bread with homemade butter, or a thoughtful note.

How much should you spend on a hostess gift?

Most hostess gifts fall between $20 and $50. For a holiday dinner or an overnight stay, many people spend more. The thought matters more than the price.

Is a candle a good hostess gift?

Yes. A candle is one of the most popular hostess gifts because nearly everyone uses one, it needs no preparation, and it lets the host relax after the party. Choose a seasonal scent and a vessel she'll want to keep.

Should the host open the gift at the party?

Not necessarily. Many hosts set gifts aside to open later. That is one more reason to choose something she can enjoy on her own time.
