The Three Candles I'd Stock Up On
I keep my own Christmas candles to three, and each one has a room. If you buy only one thing this weekend, make it one of these.
- Yuletide Balsam Whisper Christmas Candle. My tree is artificial, so this is the candle that makes my house smell like a fresh-cut one. I burn it in the entry and the guest bath. More in What Does Balsam Smell Like?
- Berry & Bough Berry & Pine Candle. My go-to for the family room, bright with blood orange and black currant over forest pine.
- Smoken Vanilla Amber Candle. My kitchen candle while I cook, and my bathroom candle once the guests go home.
Here's how all three work together in my Christmas candle scents and how I make my house smell like Christmas.

Make Every Candle You Buy Last
A sale candle is only a deal if you get every hour out of it. Give a new candle 2 to 3 hours on its first burn, until the melt pool reaches the edge, and trim the wick to 1/4 inch before every burn after that. Here's how to trim a candle wick, and how to fix candle tunneling if one gets away from you.
